Leading Practices in Workplace Mental Health

Our country’s healthcare providers are essential to ensuring the efficient, effective and safe delivery of healthcare services to all Canadians. It is critical to protect the health and safety of this incredibly important workforce. Although there has been progress in addressing the physical health and safety of healthcare workers and workplaces, there is an equally important and urgent need to safeguard their psychological health and safety. Simply put, we can no longer afford to think of workplace health and safety from only the physical perspective.

Listen: The Psychological Health and Wellness of Leadership

TheHQ

Welcome to The HQ, CHA Learning’s/HealthCareCAN’s podcast series where we explore and discuss the topics relevant to healthcare today. The HQ focuses on the people that make up and lead our complex, adaptive system of healthcare. The HQ is your trusted headquarters as, together, we engage with thought-leaders to learn and understand what matters most to those that lead our health workforce.

In this special two-part episode, we talk to Kristin Winter Vice President of Human Resources, Workforce Optimization and Leadership Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. In Part 1, we discuss with Kristen what it’s like to be a healthcare leader and especially a people leader during the pandemic and the impact it has had on her team and the way she leads. In Part 2, we pick up the conversation with her again where she answers the question about how she sees herself coming through this and back to ‘normal’.

HealthCareCAN conducted an environmental scan, key informant interviews, and focus groups with individuals with lived experiences to develop the framework. This article outlines the findings from this scan, interviews and focus groups.
