Embracing unity and healing: A vision for equitable healthcare on National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Embracing unity and healing: A vision for equitable healthcare on National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Sept. 30, 2023 (Ottawa) – Today, on Canada’s National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we come together to honour the resilience, wisdom, and culture of Indigenous peoples. This day reminds us all that there is a lot more that needs to be done towards healing, understanding, and creating a brighter future for all the people of Canada.

As the national voice of hospitals and healthcare organizations, we stand committed to fostering positive change within the healthcare system, ensuring it is a beacon of inclusivity, equality, and cultural respect. We celebrate the courage and determination of Indigenous communities as they work towards reclaiming their traditions and healing from historical trauma.

We are inspired by the strength and dedication of Indigenous Peoples to building a healthier tomorrow, rooted in their cultural heritage and enriched by collaboration and understanding, and we share their vision of a healthcare landscape that reflects the diverse needs of people in Canada, coast to coast to coast.

Our organization values the unique perspectives and expertise of Indigenous leaders and communities in shaping a more equitable healthcare system and we pledge to advocate for policies that prioritize safe, accessible healthcare, mental wellness programs, and care tailored to the distinctive needs of each patient.

Through open dialogue, education, and shared experiences, we aspire to create an environment where mutual respect, cultural awareness, and commitment prevails. Together, we can bridge the gaps that have separated us historically, creating a healthcare system that uplifts every individual and embraces the values of truth, reconciliation and unity.

Paul-Émile Cloutier
