Federal Cabinet retreat a prime opportunity for strategic push to boost Canadian health research

Federal Cabinet retreat a prime opportunity for strategic push to boost Canadian health research

Aug. 18, 2023 (Ottawa) – As federal cabinet members prepare to gather in Prince Edward Island early next week, Canada’s health researchers are urging our federal leaders to seize this incredible opportunity to chart a new strategic course forward for health research that will benefit the economic wellbeing of the entire nation.

With other G7 peer countries stepping up their ambitions and investment in health research, Canada is in a global competition to attract and retain the brightest scientific minds and discoveries that will ensure future health and prosperity.  Without new, urgent, and direct federal investment in health research to support the modernization of the health system, our national ability to provide care and improve outcomes for the people of Canada will falter.

It is important to understand that Canada’s health researchers are not looking for a handout. Rather we are seeking strategic investment in an area that provides tremendous returns in terms of knowledge-based jobs, economic growth and – most important – better health outcomes.

We are at an important crossroads in terms of our scientific endeavour in Canada. We can invest in our future by supporting health research as a foundational plank that drives the economy and improves health outcomes, or we can cede the field to our international competitors and bid adieu to our best and brightest minds. Canada’s scientific researchers are among the world’s best, let’s make sure we keep them here.
