Dr. Michael Gardam to lead HealthCareCAN’s Board of Directors

Dr. Michael Gardam to lead HealthCareCAN’s Board of Directors

June 15, 2022 (Ottawa) – HealthCareCAN’s Board of Directors is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Michael Gardam, CEO of Health PEI, as its new Chair, effectively immediately. Dr. Gardam was selected chair at the June 14, 2022 Board of Directors meeting.

“It is an honour to be appointed as board chair to such a dedicated organization, committed to uniting the voices of healthcare leaders across the country, and to advocating for a stronger and more resilient healthcare system,” said Dr. Gardam. “The past two years have been trying for all those working in our health system, but I consider us very fortunate to have HealthCareCAN in our corner and am looking forward to working with President and CEO, Mr. Paul-Émile Cloutier, the HealthCareCAN team and all our members as we strive to emerge stronger from the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Dr. Gardam, a pioneer of using complexity science-based approaches to improve the health system’s challenges, took on the role of Health PEI’s CEO in October 2021, following over twenty years of experience in Ontario. His expertise in patient safety, system transformation and staff engagement has made him a highly-sought advisor to Canadian and international organizations, including the World Health Organization, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Canadian Foundation for Healthcare Improvement, and others, as well as numerous hospitals across Canada.

Dr. Gardam is succeeding Martine Bouchard, former President and CEO of St. Boniface Hospital in Manitoba, who has completed her term as Board Chair.

“My sincere thanks to Ms. Bouchard for her invaluable leadership and council throughout her tenure as Board Chair,” said Paul-Émile Cloutier, President and CEO of HealthCareCAN. “Dr. Gardam’s experience and wealth of knowledge will no doubt help to fill the vacuum left by Martine, and I am pleased to have the opportunity to work with him as HealthCareCAN continues to support and empower our health system’s workforce, and advocate for a strengthened health research and innovation sector, for the benefit of all the people of Canada.”

HealthCareCAN is the national voice of healthcare organizations and hospitals across Canada. We foster informed and continuous, results-oriented discovery and innovation across the continuum of healthcare.
