February 4, 2022 (Ottawa) – As the national voice of hospitals and healthcare organizations across Canada, HealthCareCAN is urging protesters to be respectful toward local residents and healthcare workers.
The health system and its workforce are under tremendous pressure to maintain Canadians’ access to quality health services amid surging demand. However, fear of harassment and violence toward healthcare workers by protesters is needlessly increasing the terrible toll this pandemic is having on our health system.
While the right of any individual to protest is a hallmark of a healthy democracy, we urge those protesting not to allow their anger to endanger the health and safety of their fellow Canadians, including healthcare workers.
We must not forget, healthcare workers have put their lives on the line to help us bear and overcome the worst this pandemic has thrown at us. They have stood by our sides as we wept for loved ones lost, they have counselled us in our darkest moments, they have repeatedly put their own needs second to care for us when we need it most.
The least we can do to honour their countless sacrifices is allow them to continue their vital work safely and unobstructed. We call for reason, we call for calm, we call for respect. These are, after all, the very things that, historically, have made us proud to be Canadian. Let’s all try our best to remember that in the coming days and weeks.
