September 23, 2021 (Ottawa) – In light of the election results this week and the fact that health care is clearly an important priority for Canadians, the new federal government should do everything it can to rebuild a strong and sustainable pan-Canadian health network, devoted entirely to well-being of the population.
It will therefore have to re-establish a national dialogue from coast to coast to coast, involving all human, infrastructure and financial resources to strengthen and enhance Canada’s health system and health research institutions.
The federal government cannot ignore what Canadians want and deserve during its next mandate. We therefore call on the Prime Minister to hold a National Dialogue summit on health, where we can respectfully address issues such as older-age care, health research, health human resources, health transfers to advance the health of all Canadians.
This National Dialogue should include provincial and territorial governments, in consultation with professional health and patient groups and indigenous peoples.
COVID-19 has changed our world, how we see our health system, and our expectations of it. We must also evolve and adapt to this new world. With a new mandate, the federal government must take the opportunity to start off on the right foot to make Canada stronger.
