September 21, 2021 (Ottawa) – Canadians have delivered their verdict: they have re-elected a minority government to conduct the country’s business. HealthCareCAN is looking forward to collaborating with the federal government to help bring about the changes needed to shore up Canada’s healthcare system.
While the geopolitical divide from coast to coast is becoming increasingly evident, the fact remains that the cost of living and inflation, health financing and the post-pandemic economic recovery are – as clearly demonstrated by many national polls –the top three priorities of Canadians throughout this election campaign.
HealthCareCAN is of the opinion, in light of the results of yesterday’s election, that the future Government of Canada should do everything it can to rebuild a strong and sustainable pan-Canadian health system. Even as the COVID-19 pandemic grinds on, Canada’s still has a tremendous opportunity to take strategic action to develop and implement long-term solutions to address the growing gaps in healthcare and health research.
HealthCareCAN recalls clear actions that are needed that can shore up our health system and help our health research sector realize its full potential, specifically:
- Ramp up Canadian health research and biosciences through consistent, long-term investment.
- Reimagine older adult care through improved home, community and long-term care services.
- Build a national health workforce planning strategy.
- Modernize Canada’s health infrastructure to better support virtual care and tackle climate change.
- Increase federal health transfers to provinces and territories to improve access to critically needed services such as mental health care and supports for children and adults.
Healthcare and health research are huge economic drivers for Canada’s economy and the federal government must seize the opportunity now to invest in the sector as a down payment to help secure a healthy and prosperous future.
The world has changed since the successive waves of the pandemic began. Management methods must also evolve and adapt to the crises that confront all the paradigms that before now governed political decision-making based, too often unfortunately, on cyclical improvisation.
While some may look at the results of the Sept. 20 election and see the status quo, the vast majority of Canadians agree that the status quo in healthcare is not sufficient. In every poll from every election in recent memory, Canadians have made it clear that investing in healthcare and health research is a top priority. Canadians are now looking to the federal government for action.
