June 1, 2021 (Ottawa) – HealthCareCAN is proud to announce one of Canada’s most distinguished healthcare executives, Chris Power, as the recipient of its 2021 Legacy of Leadership award.

Presented at the 2021 National Health Leadership Conference, the award recognizes exceptional individuals who have made long-lasting and outstanding contributions to advancing Canada’s health system and have demonstrated significant and sustained commitment toward the enhancement of the health of Canadians.

“Chris Power has been a guiding light for so many of us as we’ve traversed our health leadership journey in Canada. Her leadership example will stand as a model for today and for the years to come.” said Kathy MacNeil, CEO of Island Health and Cochair of the Canadian Health Leadership Network. “Our system is better because of her courage to speak to truth on both the national and local stages.”

From front-line nurse to one of the preeminent healthcare executives in Canada, Chris Power has spent a lifetime helping others. During her tenure as CEO of the Canadian Patient Safety Institute (CPSI), Chris recognized the tremendous opportunity to achieve safer, higher quality and patient-partnered healthcare. In February 2020 under her leadership, CPSI merged with the Canadian Foundation for Healthcare Improvement to create Healthcare Excellence Canada, a single quality and safety organization with an expanded capacity to improve healthcare for everyone in Canada.

“Chris is an exemplary health leader who has made deep contributions to safer, higher quality care in Nova Scotia, nationally, and internationally.” Said Jennifer Zelmer, President and CEO of Healthcare Excellence Canada. “Always focused on what matters to the people our health system serves, Chris’s vision and mentorship inspire us to accelerate progress toward excellence in healthcare, including via the amalgamation of the Canadian Patient Safety Institute and the Canadian Foundation for Healthcare Improvement into Healthcare Excellence Canada.”

“It is very fitting that Chris Power be recognized for the extensive leadership that she has provided over the course of her career in Canadian healthcare.” added Paul-Émile Cloutier, HealthCareCAN President and CEO. “Her vision and dedication have supported advances in patient safety, education, and innovative practices and she played a foundational role as the first-ever HealthCareCAN board co-chair after the merger of our two legacy organizations, the Association of Canadian Academic Healthcare Organizations and the Canadian Healthcare Association.”

Chris’ success has earned her several accolades throughout her illustrious career. She was named one of Canada’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women in the Public-Sector Category three years in a row (2007-2009), inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2010, named one of the Top 50 CEOs in Atlantic Canada four times and in 2013 was inducted into the Top 50 CEOs Hall of Fame.
