HealthCareCAN committed to advancing Indigenous health and reconciliation

HealthCareCAN committed to advancing Indigenous health and reconciliation

September 30, 2024 (Ottawa, ON) – On this National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we pause to reflect on our collective journey toward healing and understanding. This day is not only a time to honour those lost to the Indian residential school system but also a moment to commit to meaningful action in support of reconciliation.

It is well known that historical neglect and systemic barriers have contributed to persistent health disparities that continue to affect First Nations, Inuit and Métis individuals, families and communities. As a national healthcare organization, HealthCareCAN recognizes the vital importance of addressing the health-related Calls to Action outlined in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s report and of implementing the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act.

HealthCareCAN also recognizes that reconciliation is not merely a one-day observance; it is a continuous commitment. As such, we remain deeply committed to our pledge to highlight and advance innovative and exemplary practices in addressing Indigenous health challenges—both in Canada and internationally—to actively eliminate differences in care and enable our members to deliver compassionate care that honours the dignity of every individual.

Let us use this day to reflect on our roles as allies in the reconciliation journey. Together, we can build a more equitable healthcare system—one that values every voice and embraces the rich diversity of our communities.

In solidarity and respect,

Paul-Émile Cloutier
President & CEO

HealthCareCAN is the national voice of health authorities, hospitals, health research, and healthcare organizations across Canada. We foster informed and continuous, results-oriented discovery and innovation across the continuum of healthcare.
