We are currently looking for a Nurse Practitioner to join the Division of Haematology/Oncology to provide leadership and promote excellence in family-centred nursing care through the five main role components of expert practice, education, consultation, research and leader/change agent. This role will support the Neuro-oncology patient population, in particular those with high-risk, highly malignant and difficult to treat tumours, across the inpatient and outpatient setting.

 

Here’s What You’ll Get To Do
Clinical Practice

Research/Clinical trials

  • 1.0 FTE, 1-year contract
  • In alignment with Precision Child Health, leading the team with enrolling, coordinating, and recruiting for the research studies specific to our population
  • Key contact for external referrals to coordinate consults for early phase clinical trials
  • Responsibility to provide information regarding informed consent and conduct of clinical trials
  • Function autonomously with guidance from the Principal Investigator, CRAs and other key stakeholders (e.g. trial sponsor)
  • Provide support to other research team members
  • Ensure that studies are conducted with Good Clinical Practice Guidelines and REB and Research Institute policies and procedures and Health Canada Initial preparation and maintenance of study documents (e.g. clinical records, recruitment records, consents)
  • Work with Neuro-Oncology teams across Ontario and Canada to collaborate on patient care when they are enrolled in a clinical trial as well as to provide increased accessibility to clinical trials when appropriate

Inpatient Care

  • Key communicator/care coordination with the inpatient Neurosurgery team for shared and new patients on 5C, as well as when Neuro-Oncology patients are admitted to other areas of hospital
  • Care coordination on 8A, especially with highly malignant/CMMRD patient population to increase continuity and improved care experience
  • Attend and contribute to Neurosurgery interdisciplinary meeting
  • Supporting patient flow and care coordination through patient transitions from inpatient care to outpatient care, transfer to Holland Bloorview Kids Rehab

Neuro-Oncology Outpatient Clinic

  • Reviewing and signing orders for planned clinic patients including chemotherapy, supportive care and prescriptions
  • Attend, actively contribute to, and when appropriate, lead team meetings and multidisciplinary meetings
  • Assessment (health history, physical exam), clinical management, palliation, collaboration with allied health and other services for care, and follow-up with Neuro Oncology patients in clinic
  • Collaborate with teams outside of Sick Kids where Neuro-Oncology patients are getting active treatment (e.g. Princess Margaret Hospital Radiation team, U.S. radiation teams, Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital, POGO satellite clinics, Emily’s House, other centres providing managed access treatments)
  • Cancer Interception, Innovative treatment of tumours that historically have had no treatment to reduce risk of transformation to malignant disease
  • Contribute to quality improvement opportunities to streamline workflows and processes to improve patient experience

Education, Mentorship, and Research

  • Lead in program development to identify unmet needs and teach updated best practices and/or evidence to improve patient outcomes. Examples include speaking at nursing / fellow orientation or providing updates at academic meetings 
  • Provide regular informal and formal education strategies for staff nurses specifically around new drugs and treatments e.g. role of ctDNA, targeted therapies, immunotherapy

Continuity of care

  • Informal and formal education
  • Preceptor/mentor to Nurse Practitioner students
  • Knowledge dissemination and information sharing to other Canadian sites and at international meetings

Leadership and Organizational & Systems Management

  • Development and leader of clinical trial access for Neuro-Oncology patients
  • Develop and maintain knowledge of clinical trials
  • Present at National and Provincial rounds
  • Acts as a change agent
  • Implemented referral pathway for new clinical trial patients
  • Referral pathway for neurosurgery patients
  • Update and development of ongoing standard of care documentation
  • Interprofessional collaboration
  • Radiology, tumour boards, multi-disciplinary rounds (Neuro-Oncology and Neurosurgery), molecular tumour boards

Here’s What You’ll Need
Essential Requirements 

  • Master of Nursing or equivalent with a clinical focus
  • Completion of a Post-Master of Nursing (NP Field) Diploma in Paediatrics or Primary Health Care
  • Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario within the RN in good standing (Extended Class) 
  • 5 years of clinical nursing experience in paediatrics 
  • Previous experience in a leadership role 
  • Excellent communication and relational skills
  • Innovative critical thinking with excellent problem-solving skills 
  • Excellent time management skills 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills¿ 
  • Ability to work both independently and part of an interdisciplinary team¿ 
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) and experience advancing EDI objectives 

Assets  

  • Experience in Haematology/Oncology, chemotherapy administration and palliative care is an asset 
  • Ability to act as a change agent, and foster teamwork and consensus-building 
  • Knowledge of theoretical frameworks and research application 
  • Adaptable to work within different team environments and clinical settings 

Employment Type

  • 1.0 FTE, 1-year contract
  • Inpatient and Outpatient program support; potential for variety of shifts with different lengths dependent on patient care needs
