Securing Patient Data in the Digital Age: DGSI and HealthCareCAN Release CAN/DGSI 118 Cyber Resiliency Standard for Healthcare

Securing Patient Data in the Digital Age: DGSI and HealthCareCAN Release CAN/DGSI 118 Cyber Resiliency Standard for Healthcare

NOVEMBER 29, 2023 – The Digital Governance Standards Institute (DGSI) and HealthCareCAN are pleased to announce the official publication of national standard, CAN/DGSI 118: Cyber Resiliency in Healthcare. This comprehensive standard provides healthcare organizations with a robust framework to bolster their cyber resiliency measures, ensuring the security and protection of sensitive patient data in an increasingly digital landscape.

With the rising frequency and sophistication of cyber-attacks targeting healthcare organizations, the need to safeguard patient information from cyber threats has never been more crucial.

“We believe that CAN/DGSI118 will serve as a cornerstone for healthcare organizations striving to enhance their cyber resiliency,” states Kopiha Nathan, Lead, Privacy and Compliance Officer from HIROC. “The collaboration among industry experts and stakeholders during the public review period has resulted in a robust standard that addresses the unique challenges faced by the healthcare sector.”

Darryl Kingston, Executive Director of Digital Governance Standards Institute offers, “CAN/DGSI118 offers a flexible yet comprehensive approach that takes into consideration the diverse range of healthcare organizations, technologies, and regulatory environments across Canada. By adopting this standard, healthcare organizations can establish a solid foundation for preventing, detecting, responding to, and recovering from cyber-attacks, ultimately ensuring the safety and confidentiality of patient data. We are happy to have worked with HealthCareCAN and Public Safety Canada on leading the development of a robust cybersecurity standard for delivery of healthcare services in Canada.”

“Cybercrime is of particular concern for the health sector because vulnerabilities threaten not only the security of information systems but also the health and safety of patients, residents and clients. Standards that can be implemented and sustained are essential to protect patient safety in a digital health system,” states Paul-Émile Cloutier, President and CEO, HealthCareCAN. “CAN/DGSI 118: Cyber Resiliency in Healthcare will help health leaders navigate and address vulnerabilities in their digital infrastructure and prevent cyberattacks. With a clear framework and enhanced cybersecurity capabilities, Canada’s healthcare organizations will be better positioned to respond to evolving threats, defend against cybercrime, and enhance patient safety.”

The publication of CAN/DGSI118 marks a significant milestone in enhancing the cyber resiliency of healthcare organizations across Canada. It reflects DGSI’s dedication to promoting digital governance standards that foster trust, security, and innovation in today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape.
