June 21, 2023 (Ottawa, ON) – Today, on National Indigenous Peoples Day 2023, HealthCareCAN joins our partner organizations from coast to coast to coast in reaffirming our commitment to build and support equitable, culturally safe, and accessible healthcare for all.

We recognize that Indigenous Peoples in Canada have historically experienced significant disparities in healthcare outcomes, stemming from a complex interplay of historical injustices, systemic barriers, and social determinants of health. These disparities persist today, and we acknowledge that achieving health equity requires a comprehensive approach that addresses these underlying factors.

We stand in solidarity with Indigenous communities and commit ourselves to advancing the cause of Indigenous health. We also recognize the importance of Indigenous self-determination and the need to centre Indigenous voices and perspectives in the development and implementation of healthcare policies and programs.

Only through true partnership and collaboration can we effectively meet and address the unique healthcare needs and priorities of Indigenous peoples, and by fostering trust, respect, and cultural understanding, we can create an environment and system where Indigenous Peoples feel supported and empowered to seek and receive the healthcare they need.

National Indigenous Peoples Day also serves as a reminder of the rich cultural heritage and traditional knowledge that Indigenous peoples bring to healthcare. We recognize and value the unique strengths and wisdom embedded in Indigenous healing practices and seek to support our members as they integrate these practices into Canada’s healthcare system in a respectful and collaborative manner.

On this day, we invite all Canadians to join us in advocating for a more equitable and inclusive healthcare system. We encourage healthcare organizations, policymakers, and stakeholders to engage in meaningful consultation with Indigenous communities and to incorporate their perspectives into the development of healthcare practices, policies, programs, and services.

Together, let us work towards a future where Indigenous communities thrive, empowered by equitable access to quality healthcare and the recognition of their inherent rights and strengths.
