HealthCareCAN reaffirms commitment to walking path of reconciliation

HealthCareCAN reaffirms commitment to walking path of reconciliation

Sept. 30, 2022 (Ottawa) – Today we mark Canada’s second official National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, also known as Orange Shirt Day. On this day, as on all days, HealthCareCAN remains committed to helping build a health system that better meets the needs of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples.

Equitable access to safe, quality healthcare is a basic human right and a cornerstone of Canada’s health system, yet we recognize that as a country, we still have a long way to go to achieve this.

As the national voice of healthcare and health research institutions across Canada, we embrace Gov. General Mary May Simon’s words “Reconciliation is a way of life, continuous, with no end date.” and so we continue to double-down on our duty of advancing reconciliation in healthcare, fostering culturally safe care, and improving health outcomes and patient experiences for all First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples.

HealthCareCAN stands in support of residential school survivors and intergenerational trauma survivors, we recognize the uncomfortable truth of the health system’s role in this harm, and pledge to continue educating ourselves on how we can individually and collectively move forward on the path toward reconciliation in Canada.

#OrangeShirtDay #EveryChildMatters #NDTR #TruthAndReconciliation.

Paul-Émile Cloutier
President & CEO
