November 10, 2021 (Ottawa) – HealthCareCAN is pleased to announce that our President and CEO, Paul-Émile Cloutier was appointed to the Governing Council of the International Hospital Federation (IHF), effective November 8, 2021.

“Collaboration and cooperation are important building blocks for a strong, resilient health system,” said Paul-Émile Cloutier. “As a new member of the IHF Governing Council, I am looking forward to working with my fellow Council members on addressing the challenges of strengthening the healthcare sector in Canada and internationally via networking and knowledge transfer.” He further stated that Canada’s healthcare system’s issues are remarkably similar to those in other countries around the world and that COVID-19 highlighted the ongoing capacity cooperation of global nations.

As the national voice for hospitals and healthcare organizations across Canada, HealthCareCAN deeply values the opportunities that our membership in the IHF brings to our member organizations. Through this membership, HealthCareCAN is able to offer our members access to knowledge and experiences from health leaders around the world. In turn, we are able to share Canadian-developed best practices and innovations in health and health research to improve health systems globally.

“On behalf of the board, I am extremely pleased to hear of Mr. Cloutier’s appointment,” said Martine Bouchard, Chair of HealthCareCAN’s Board of Directors. “The past two years have proven that Canada is a strong global leader in health, this is a unique opportunity for our country, through HealthCareCAN, to apply our lessons learned to shape a better future for healthcare around the world.”

Paul-Émile Cloutier has a long history of leadership in health. Prior to his appointment as President and CEO of HealthCareCAN in 2017, he held several leadership roles in the health sector, including Vice-President of Advocacy and External Relations of Genome Canada and CEO and Secretary General of the Canadian Medical Association. Over the years, Paul-Émile has been an active member in the community and served on a number of Boards, including his current roles on the Kemptville District Hospital Board and the Blue Cross Board of Directors.

The IHF Governing Council is composed of twenty-five elected members and is the organ charged with the overall governing of the affairs of the IHF, within the boundaries of the authority of or authorization by the General Assembly.
