HealthCareCAN Statement on Release from Council of the Federation

HealthCareCAN Statement on Release from Council of the Federation
Print-friendly PDF

March 4, 2021 — HealthCareCAN supports today’s call from Canada’s Premiers that the federal government play a bigger role in healthcare by providing more resources and sustainable funding for healthcare and health infrastructure.

COVID-19 has starkly exposed some of the pre-existing challenges facing our health care system, challenges that our country’s frontline health workers face everyday as they strive to provide timely, high-quality care to Canadians. These dedicated individuals deserve to be supported with increased funding from the federal government.

A strengthened Canadian health system supported by long-term federal investments in health and health research is not just necessary but overdue. Canadians agree, as witnessed by a recent Abacus poll conducted for HealthCareCAN that found 74% felt the federal government should play a leadership role in healthcare even if that is a provincial responsibility.

The time for politics is long over. Beginning with the soon-to-be released federal budget, Canada’s national government must seize the chance to put the health of Canadians first.
