June 22, 2018 (Ottawa) – HealthCareCAN congratulates Dr. Michael Strong on being appointed the new President of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), as of October 1, 2018.

“Dr. Strong’s formidable background in research and education within the Canadian health system will benefit CIHR greatly,” said Paul-Émile Cloutier, President and CEO of HealthCareCAN.  “We are very pleased to hear about his appointment and look forward to working together in supporting health research in Canadian hospitals.”

Canada’s research hospitals serve as powerful innovation hubs, critical to the government’s Innovation Agenda across all sectors of the economy. In one of the last reports of the Advisory Council on Economic Growth, Dominic Barton, Chair, identified Health and Life Sciences sectors as having “significant untapped potential that will require focus and attention to unlock”. In order to achieve this, much work still needs to be done to fully leverage research hospitals as economic and health innovation engines with tremendous national and global potential. HealthCareCAN looks forward to future collaboration opportunities with CIHR to make this a reality.

“On behalf of my members, I thank Dr. Roderick McInnes for his service in strengthening CIHR’s relationship with the health research community,” concluded Paul-Émile Cloutier. HealthCareCAN’s member hospitals and their research institutes rely heavily on funding from CIHR to facilitate discoveries which lead to innovative treatments and services that improve the health and quality of life of Canadians across our country.

HealthCareCAN is the national voice of healthcare organizations and hospitals across Canada. We foster informed and continuous, results-oriented discovery and innovation across the continuum of healthcare.  We act with others to enhance the health of the people of Canada; to build the capability for high quality care; and to help ensure value for money in publicly financed, healthcare programs.
