HealthCareCAN Statement on the External Review of Pan-Canadian Health Organizations

HealthCareCAN Statement on the External Review of Pan-Canadian Health Organizations

Print-friendly PDF

“HealthCareCAN congratulates authors Dr. Danielle Martin and Pierre-Gerlier Forest for their report Fit for Purpose: Findings and Recommendations of the External Review of the Pan-Canadian Health Organizations. HealthCareCAN was one of many organizations asked to provide input as part of the Review process. The authors’ deep engagement with the views of stakeholders and key informants is clear in the report’s analysis and recommendations.

The External Review’s work is bold and forward thinking. It encourages the government to re-imagine the federal role in health and healthcare, and to exercise greater leadership in working towards the goals it wants to achieve in the health system. HealthCareCAN welcomes the options proposed in the report on this front, and urges the federal government to be ambitious in outlining its vision for health and healthcare in Canada.

The Review is also clear that a reconfigured suite of Pan-Canadian Health Organizations needs to address priorities common to all Canadian provinces and territories and health stakeholders no matter how difficult this might be on its face. The federal government must be engaged in an ongoing partnership with the provinces and territories to define and tackle barriers to system change.

HealthCareCAN also concurs with the recommendation to initiate a dialogue with National Indigenous Organizations that would lead to a new model and a new culture in order to best serve Indigenous communities’ health priorities.

We recognize that change is difficult but it can be positive especially if it results in a more coherent federal strategy. Reducing silos and providing better coordination will lead to improved outcomes for our patients and communities.

HealthCareCAN looks forward to the government’s response to the Review’s insights and recommendations.”
